Public Speaking Outline and PowerPoint

OUTLINE DIRECTIONS: Students will complete a Full Sentence Persuasive Outline following the steps listed below. A sample outline is also available. This will be for an 8-10 minute speech.

WORK CITED DIRECTIONS: Students are to submit SIX sources cited in APA format. Wiki is NOT acceptable. Each student must have at least one book/e-book, one website, and one periodical. Students are able to choose for the final three sources. Be sure all references are Credible.

For this assignment be sure to:

1. Students Must:
   1. Submit only one attachment.
   2. Only use file types: Word, PDF, HTML, RTF, or plain text.
   3. Always include the file extension.

Steps to the Persuasive Opening and Closing:

Introduction of Persuasive Speech

1. Attention Getter-This is how we first connect or engage our audience

– There are two rules to the Attention Getter:

1. The Attention Getter Must be the FIRST thing you say.

2. The Attention Getter Must be related to the remainder of the Speech.

3. The Attention Getter should be creative and unique.

Examples: poems, lyrics, quotes, stories, compare and contrast subjects that are interesting to the audience, joke (be tactful and be sure the joke suits your audience).

2. Need Step- The listener relevance has two parts.

Part 1-The speaker states what the Speech is about.

Part 2-The speaker explains how this information is relevant to their audience. Students MUST use a statistic or question here!!! Be sure to cite the statistic.

Examples: I am going to share with you all, what my life is like as a mother of three. Many that have children understand the importance of your children in your life, others may have a desire to have children in the future or have those special little ones that are currently a part of their life.

Other Examples: Questions, statistics –anything that helps your audience understand how the Speech will affect them.

3. Satisfaction Step- This is what gives you the knowledge to speak on this topic.

Example: I watch how my mother carefully guides my sister and I through life, and research all I can about how to properly guide my little ones through life. My children are basically happy well rounded children and that is an indication to me that I’m doing a pretty good job.

Other Examples: Personal Experience, Indirect Experience, Research Done, Classes Taken, etc.

4. Visualization Step- Help your audience to form a mental picture of how they benefit from your plan. This step works best when students can help their audience to visualize themselves going through a situation similar to that, you are persuading about.

–This step typically starts with close your eyes and imagine, or giving a story of some kind.

Example: Imagine bringing home the child of your dreams. Taking care of this child , loving this child, and making this child a part of your family, only to find two years later this child being taken away from you. This was very real for the adoptive parents of Veronica…

5. Thesis Preview-This is a statement that summarizes what you are about to discuss. Be sure to specifically state your main points.

Example: First, I will discuss why DUI roadblocks are unconstitutional. Then I am going to give you some statistics on how ineffective DUI roadblocks really are. Finally, I’ll explain the only solution to this problem: removing these roadblocks.

Body should be set up with problem/solution or cause/effect.

Closing of Persuasive Speech

1. Thesis Review– This is a statement that summarizes what you have already spoken about. Please be sure to specifically state your main points.

Example : I have explained why DUI roadblocks are unconstitutional. Then I provided some statistics on how ineffective DUI roadblocks really are. Finally, I explained the only solution to this problem: removing these roadblocks.

2. Repeat Problem –The point you are trying to drive home should be re-stated once again.

Example- Roadblocks used to identify drunk drivers are unconstitutional and ineffective and should be removed.

3. Clincher- This is the thought provoking idea that you leave your audience with.

There are two rules to the clincher.

1. The clincher should be something that sticks with your audience; they think about even once the Speech is done.

2. The clincher must tie back in to your Attention Getter.

Powerpoint

___Minimum of 10 slides;

____Follow the 5/5-try not to have more than 5 words across or 5 lines down

___Slideshow must follow Body presentation

___Pictures must be uniform

___Ending Punctuation should not be on slides

___Power point should enhance the presentation and not take the place of words

___All writing on PowerPoint must be at least 24 font.

___There must be a background.

___The PowerPoint as a whole must be uniform.
